About Otomo

Who is Otomo?

Otomo is a dedicated Zen practitioner, Stoic philosopher, and author of The Way of ZenStoa, a book that bridges the wisdom of Zen Buddhism and Stoicism into a unified path of self-discipline, mindfulness, and awakening.

Otomo’s Journey into Zen and Stoicism

Otomo began his Zen journey in 1987 at a small Zen center in Portland, Oregon, where he lived as a resident staff member. Under the guidance of a married Zen priest who had trained with Houn Jiyu-Kennett at Mount Shasta Abbey, he immersed himself in traditional Zen practice, learning the importance of mind training, discipline, and direct experience.

During his studies, Otomo discovered that Stoicism—a Greek philosophical tradition dating back to the 3rd century BCE—shared many of the same core principles as Zen. This led him to explore the connection between Zen and Stoicism, uncovering their parallel teachings on impermanence, self-mastery, and detachment from external circumstances.

The Creation of ZenStoa

Over decades of practice and research, Otomo developed the ZenStoa perspective—a modern, Western approach to Zen that strips away unnecessary cultural rituals and integrates the practicality of Stoic philosophy. His book, The Way of ZenStoa, provides an accessible framework for those seeking mental clarity, resilience, and wisdom without the need for rigid dogma.
